Based upon this blueprint... (Credits to Renegade for finding it)

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ares/+bug/builtas-function-for-units-to-randomly-give-you-one-of-several-variations-see-description

In Generals the GLA Technical had up to 3 Different models which the game would produce upon completion and more recently something similar to the Dark Templar in Starcraft 2 where one has a Arm Blade while the other has a Double Scythe.

Allow Infantry,Vehicles & Aircrafts to have different models?

Something like

For the GI as an example you can put in a new tag
Alt.Graphics=E1BLK,E1BRN,E1YLW

Where E1BLK is a Dark-Brown GI,E1BRN is a slightly lighter skin & E1YLW has Pale Skin.

For a Vehicle example lets take the IFV

Alt.Graphics=FVSTRYK,FVJEEP,FVTNK

Where the IFV has a chance of ejecting out of the Factory as a Stryker,Car or a Tank Version

And most probably they should also obey AlternateTheaterArt as well...

Would love this for D-day too, so I can have multiple camo variants on some tanks.

Don't think Jem wanted them to show up on the sidebar, rather when you build the main vehicle it pops out using any of the graphics in the list to give the same unit variations. I suppose the game could also randomly choose which one to display on the sidebar too...

Camo vs cameo.  Different, Omega.

Isn't it great that Ares is such a young project that you can still have fresh ideas for it?
I mean, can you imagine what it'd be like if there were so many requests and ideas, that they'd have no other choice but to pit them against each other in some sort of deathmatch, just to get the number down to a manageable count?

Pardon my sarcasm, but this kind of unwillingness to even do something as basic as checking whether a request has been made before is what's slowly driving a dagger into this project's heart.

Well you cannot expect people to look through hundreds of blueprints just to make sure that what they request hasn't been requested already.

Well I recall seeing those blueprints way back. And I figured this could also be a discussion topic to it. (Like how my other recent suggestions link to a Forum Topic in PPM)

But you can expect the developers to do the checking for you, as well as doing the actual work and the testing?

Thank you, this kind of attitude is exactly what I meant.

Was there a new blueprint posted regarding this request? Look at there, there wasn't.

Once upon a time, you said that the discussion for a blueprint can be anywhere, now there is a discussion for one, and you pull your sword against it.

Shouting down the good and actually supportive users, that's what slowly drives a dagger into this project's heart.

Renegade, you expect too much from the casual Ares users.

Starkku did not even discuss his request or create a blueprint for the generic SW (don't know the exact name) inferment tag, yet it is implemented already.

The concept of creating a blueprint for Ares is long gone.

I wouldn't say that. For features as complex as replacing a hardcoded number with a variable, blueprints are just overhead (though they are still useful in project management). For bigger features that have to evolve, people need a place to discuss and to support them.

Launchpad is sometimes a bit cumbersome to use. I remembered from the old days this feature was called BuiltAs, but search didn't turn up anything. One has to use advanced search to find it, because it is marked as invalid. I don't expect anybody to know what it is called (if it's there), which alternative search terms may find it, and what it is marked as.

Depending on how this feature is planned, it could be "nice with problems" (each image type being a distinct unit) or "maybe quite complex" (one unit, which keeps many sets of unit graphics). I'll look at this (and the other feature requests) when 0.3 is out.

From the coder's POV, the art thingie might be easy to set up in that TechnoClass_Init hook we have, but most of my looks-simpler stuff turned out to be total NOWAY results... so yea.
