This sand replaces the old sand, so it is indeed morphable. All of the "basic" terrain types are by default morphable, i.e. sand, rough, grass and pavement.

I'm a strong advocate against morphable terrain, personally. messes up gameplay too much

The one that causes craters like the Ion Cannon / Cluster Missile did. Afaik that is Deformable (as it is mentioned in code).

I always liked how the Ion Cannon and Multi-Missile created craters. Over a larger period of time they could even be used to limit your opponent's building space.
