Right... after a LOT of messing around I FINALLY found a way to get the patch working.

So, rename game.exe to something else, and rename dawn.exe to game.exe.

Start the 8pl patch and immediately set it to 8 players.
(this has to be done BEFORE starting the game, apparently)

Then, start game.exe, and it will work.

Don't bother with the 5-6-7pl, since you can always just start the game with less players than the maximum.
