Toughts on the Siege Chopper
Subject description: An anusual aircraft
Hello!
I assume that you all know the unit on the picture.
A heavy artillery helicopter with high mobility and low armor.
I find it hard to believe that such thing can even fly with all the heavy shells and cannon. But let's leave that to the game.
I wish to hear what you think about this unit and some tactics with it. I personaly like it: fast, hard hitting, flying, fairly cheap.
How do you find this unit? Is it useful? Is it weak? Is it even worth to be in the Soviet Arsenal?
I found that some mods remove the unit or make it do anything ecept being an artillery. I would like to hear some toughts on that too.
I wish to replace it with something more suitable for the Soviets, since my mod aims for such things.
I liked a lot, the soviets had no air power besides the zep, and it's transformation made it even more interesting, maybe it's not viable on PvP, but I enjoyed it a lot when I was playing YR, it's good for camping. _________________

This unit demands too much micro in the faction's design.
Don't get me wrong, the idea is nice. I'm also aware that the Siege Chopper is a prominent unit in the YR multiplayer metagame.
Still, IMO, the execution simply doesn't really fit to the Soviet steamrolling. Idea and featurewise I'd assume the thing being Allied - but Prism Tank is just better there, compared to the V3, which gave you less micro on the cost of destructable projectiles.
Due to the retooling of AS in these days - with the YR to OpenRA transition and the changes related - the Siege Chopper might get a chance to be featured in AS, but in the Ares-based builds, it was only accessible as a Secret Lab boon - for it's credit, the Secret Lab boons in AS were mostly failed designs or homage units like the Mammoth MkII, so yea, Siege Chopper made sense there.
The sole reason I even decided to keep Siege Chopper ultimately was IIRC Roby_Rulz's (excuse me if I get it wrong here) remake of the voxel because the voxel-SHP animation transition is terribly jarring and no way anyone would work around that. _________________ "If you didn't get angry and mad and frustrated, that means you don't care about the end result, and are doing something wrong." - Greg Kroah-Hartman

They were the thing that didn't fit in the soviet army and at the same itme it was a very fresh idea.
I use them mostly vs Yuri and his Slave miners. I don't use them vs the Allies because of Harriers, Rocketeers. Still, they are a good base AA, if you don't have flak cannons for some reason.
I think it's a silly unit, but tactically it's not much different than a slow moving howitzer unit, easy to catch and kill if you have an offensive guard. But you could easily replace it with a hovercraft MLRS which shoots medium range, medium power rockets, somewhere between the IFV and V3. _________________ http://www.moddb.com/mods/scorched-earth-ra2-mod-with-smart-ai QUICK_EDIT
