So yeah, coming September the 4th is a new Iron Maiden album "The Book of Souls" with a suitably clean cover to mark the enigmatic epic double disc release.

It's the longest work they've ever done, including the longest track they've ever recorded with the final piece being at 20 minutes. Whatever you think of Iron Maiden and their different eras, it's pretty ztyping cool that at this stage of their career they've embarked on something so big. It could well be their magnum opus.

Two days ago they released a track from the album called Speed of Light.

Despite the kind of lame, sort of ok, strange, random video the song is really cool! The more I listen to it the more I enjoy it. It's just a great rocking song that keeps up the pace with a really crisp melody in there, a guitar solo duet that is very nice and I have to point out the really nice sounding drumming going on.

If this is what's to come then I cannot wait for the full album. I've been a bit on-off with their later era stuff (2000 onwards) but this sounds right up my alley.

What y'all think? There must be some other Maiden fans on PPM.

-----

As a sidenote, but also speaking of the 'old boys', David Gilmour recently released a new track with an AWESOME music video.

Hm, I have to admit that I am not really a fan of the newest Disturbed album and that Iron Maiden has some good stuff (I really like "Hallowed be thy Name", for example).

I guess I gotta wait until IM has released their stuff before I can decide whetever IM or disturbed has made a better album

Music from Touhou 15 beats them both.

I really, REALLY like the latest Korpiklaani album #Tongue
Also, at least Iron Maiden doesn't have a broken all-caps key on Facebook unlike a certain Disturbed member #Tongue

Disappointing. Chen should like Touhou 15's music as well, consider that even the master of her master makes an appearance in the game.

Shush, I haven't had the time to look it up yet. Chen is too busy sailing the 7 seas.

It's... funny and very disturbing at the same time. I could understand most Rammstein lyrics, but for his solo stuff he pushed it to the next level of... wrongness #Tongue

Me neither until I walked into my local CD store and saw the album. The sales guy said it was out only a week #Tongue

Eh Dutchy, Rammstein has done "wrongness" since they started.

I forgot which album it was, I think the second, that implied some kind of nazi gay-gangbang on the cover.

Not really a fan of Rammstein myself, don't understand why they're so big over here when there are similar bands that are much, much better (IE: Oomph).

That was their first, Herzeleid. I know Rammstein always had some risky lyrics, but this is even better/worse (depending on your view). I'm not saying it is bad, but I won't listen to it as often as I do with Rammstein #Tongue

No. :p Yes, they did inspire Rammstein, but Rammstein went avantgarde with their lyrics. Ooomph! is too...normal.

Not to mention the hard guitar sound Rammstein has.

And the Pyro show.

And the sound quality at concerts.

And the videos.

And, well... #Tongue

Oh please, pyros hardly make their music and ridiculous lyrics any better. Razz Oomph! are numero uno, but there is no denying how impressive Rammstein are live.

Well, the albums out! Verdicts, verdicts.

Gonna take me a while to digest the whole thing because it's quite dense but there are immediately some standout tracks for me. If Eternity Should Fail, Speed of Light, The Book of Souls, Tears of a Clown and Empire of the Clouds. I don't think there's a bad track but they're the highlights for me so far.

It's quite interesting that it captures both their modern sound and their 80s stuff. Bits are reminiscent of Flight of Icarus, Rime of the Ancient Mariner and quite a lot of the riffs felt like they could've been on either the Fear of Dark or No Prayer for the Dying albums. Of course that is done through lens of their last 15 years with a more live sound (however this one has more production on it than the last few, which I'm happy about). The first track, If Eternity Should Fail, starts with a nice synthy opening, somewhat unusual for Maiden but reminded me of Caught Somewhere in Time or Paschendale.

Whats interesting also is that the bandmembers each contributed more writing this time around instead or pimarily just Steve Harris, which definitely lends it a fresher sound. Again, If Eternity Should Fail but also Empire of the Clouds are pretty grand for Maiden and were both written exclusively by Bruce Dickinson and both some of the finest moments on the two discs. Empire of the Clouds is particularly impressive because they managed to pull off the 18 minutes really beautifully, without sounding too proggy (even though I love that in other groups). Could you have imagined Maiden with piano and a teensy bit of orchestral flourishes back in the 80s? And it's done in quite a nice way, other than some metal/orchestral combos I can think of it. It's not showing off, it's not there for a cheap tear jerk/euphoric moment, but is quite nicely integrated with the band. It's definitely fantastic to see a group with this amount of years on them experiment. The album manages to encompass pretty much everything Maiden is about and still push the boundaries a bit further.

Not sure it can topple the original Iron Maiden self-titled album as my favourite but it's definitely excellent full album experience, which the band have become increasingly good at over the last 15 years.

Too bad my left ears felt like it's been underwater for the last 2 days. Might enjoy everything even more when it goes away. #Tongue

I listened to it through and really enjoyed it.  But man was it a long listen.  With an average of 8 minutes a song, simultaneously I felt like they needed an editor and I couldn't hear anything that could be cut.

I'd say Omega's list there were the highlights for me too, but looking back over the track listing I quite enjoyed all of it.

I think I could've cut down The Red and the Black honestly. The last half is so good but the first isn't as interesting to me... it has that live stadium anthem thing which I'm never been much of a fan of in studio albums but the last half would make an excellent instrumental track by itself that I could listen to on repeat. Plus I don't think they've done an instrumental for a long time.

Shadows of the Valley also has exactly the same riff and vocal melody as the Fallen Angel chorus, which really jars my brain even though this is probably a much better song.

Everyone seems to be saying Death or Glory is the most generic track and could be cut, which I guess it is but I quite enjoy it honestly. Sounds like it could've been Judas Priest.

The more I listen though The Great Unknown and When the River Runs Deep stand out too as really good tracks.
