What I really like of old c&c games is that they support higher resolution and widescreen due to their pixel based graphic system, so I'm not stuck with limited FoV. But it was always like that? Since I can't go back 15 years, I ask you guys if anyone remember if such easy ini resolution change was possible back then. Then I must say it was very ingenious by Westwood as contemporary RTS games, even hits like Starcraft, Warcraft, Age of empires had no such feature, although the latter (2) got recently a HD version, Starcraft is possible only with some buggy hack. With less known games this it was even less possible.

So how the c&c (2D) engine differs from other (2D) RTS games in that period?

TD and RA1 didn't have resolution options originally IIRC, only TS and above did (and even then it was capped at 1024x768 without ini changes).

And IMO, it's not exactly a bad thing either. SC wouldn't have been an e-sport unless they banned resolution changes, because higher resolution gives you an advantage. That's one of the good things about 3D or scalable graphics- you can fix the view without effecting the resolution.

The INI resolution option was available in TS, 15 years ago as well. Though the menu screen resolution
is still fixed and RA2YR even displaces other open application's window positions because of it.

And in game resolution only scales well upto certain level. After that there is sidebar limitation, out
of map area shows garbage with smaller maps, text becomes unreadable, minimap looses relevance.

Other games like Homeworld, Total Annihilation etc. also scale well.

Can check out widescreen options at http://www.wsgf.org/mgl

Arbitrary resolutions were hacked into C&C95, RA95 and Dune 2k by the community over a decade after the games released.

TS and RA2 had those at release.

Total Annihilation as previously mentioned has arbitrary resolutions as a start up parameter.
