Long story short: I want to add a 'Dune' skirmish-mode for Supremacy. But I can't really do that with what VXLs are around. Except for that Aerial Defense Platform I found on http://www.yrargentina.com/old/index.php

Does anyone know if a conversion is possible? Which programs do I need?

Does anyone want to get in the 'Special Thanks' section of the credits? #Tongue

You can use DuneEx to extract files from EBFD. I don't know if you can easily convert them to vxl, if it was tho I'd expect someone to have already done it by now.

As a last resort you could use 3DRipper to take a 3D screenshot & then cut up & convert that.

PS: The Voxel forum is for posting finished vxls for download, questions about vxls go in Media Hut, so topic moved...

I'm not joking. At all. Is it possible, Y/N?

If not, would someone want to help me re-make the 3D units to VXLs/SHPs?

The funny things is, while checking some other, completely unrelated things in E:BfD, I noticed that a LOT of XBFs are outside MIXs/BAGs. Dunno if the tanks are among them, but I'm sure XCC can handle it. And if not, I should still have DuneEx somewhere.
I don't have any 3D programs, tho, that work on my HP Mini, including Blender, as my Win10 is still away. And I have no doubt 3DRipper won't work either.

Did someone test if the 3D models can be imported into Blender, then export into 3DS and finally into VXL with VXLSE?

EDIT: A quick guide on how to start using 3DRipper to get those XBFs would be nice too.

So after looking into it a bit more I found that you can convert the XBF models to MS3D & then convert that to 3DS. However each XBF model is made up of multiple small mesh sections that have to be converted separately & then stuck back together to make a whole unit. I didn't get as far but I presume you'd need to redo the texture mapping manually as well. With that amount of work required it might be easier & quicker to just remake it from scratch.

Using 3DRipper would be the only reasonable choice but you'd still need to cut out & edit each unit tho.

Just google using 3DRipper, there are lots of guides available. Of course EBFD is so old tho it might not work with it...

For some background I've worked with strange 3D container formats like this before by EA like .drs models. It seems like this a similar case where the header contains an array per model and each model is separated between the file itself.
Someone from a Dune editing forum wrote up a rough part of a program in python last year and someone in that forum may be able to help you with it. I don't have any Dune game, so no files to work off of, but looking at it, it's certainly feasible to convert to obj and work from there. It's only a matter of delving further into the file to find the texture coordinates as it's sort of a XAML file and must be mapped somewhere.

TL;DR It's possible, but there's no perfect way to go at it without some considerable coding experience to convert it in its entirety. As Mig suggested, 3DRipper may or may not be easier.

i remember when i wanted ot make a tiberian sun mod for emperor battle for udne engine. its a cool engine. it feels like 2D C&C games but in 3D. I like it a lot more than generals. Shame that game was overlooked. but lol who cares about the dune franchise...

Ahem. According to Louis Castle, Dune by Frank Herbert was Brett Sperry's favorite book. And at the same time, Virgin had a license for making Dune games. Add some ideas into the mix, and you have the first proper RTS prototype in the form of Dune II: Building of a Dynasty, which inspired Blizzard to work on their own version, WarCraft: Humans and Orcs.
Dune 2 was released in 1992, and the first C&C, a real RTS was released in 1995.

So, I'd say that Dune is a VERY important franchise, which never got the attention it deserves. #Tongue

And you're right: E:BfD is indeed like WW's C&C, with things looking a lovely 3D that reminds you of 2D, hence why I like it the most, more than RA2, even though I've been playing RA2 for 10+ years!
Unlike Generals, C&C3 and RA3. And don't get me started on that C&C4 abomination.
(though you have to admit: Mobile Factories were only seen in Firestorm and never again. Kinda nice to see the equivalent to Nod's Fist and GDI's Mobile War Factory again. Kinda)

Bump.

Does this angle look good for RA2? If so, then I need only center the building in E:BfD at the starting angle and take a shot.

Angle & lighting is all wrong, converting screenshots to shp is never going to look good.

As I said before the best method would be to use 3DRipper to take a 3D "screenshot" & then import the models into 3DS Max/Blender & render them properly.
