This is the way to make units transparent.
Same technique can be used on shields/building animations.
Simple way: Use a plane with a check pattern as transparency map. Use the plane to cover the model itself. Need some uvw work on it though.

The example provided here has some problems with its shadows, should have removed the mask.

So the key to transperancy is deleting a few pixels?

Hmm... wonder how that translates over to VXLs...
Then again, it'd probably result in black spots...

You can use fake vxls - SHPs with the vxl lighting.And use the check pattern mask.
