what is the idea in these arena maps, is it just a map style or a game mode?


Personally I think they would look better as centre pieces for proper maps, kinda like a man built area to contain tiberium.

Are they meant to be like sports stadiums or am I reading into it to much?

The original backstory for these is simply that they are massive underground simulation rooms to predict the events of war in all forms of extreme conditions, so whilst small, the maps all feature the hazards that can be found on the specific type of theater.

Is that buildspace enough for an AI to deploy a full base including multiple buildings of specific types?

Even the tiniest flame can spark a forest fire that clears surprisingly lot of the forest, giving room for more buildings. Not only that, but the AI is also creative when it comes down to building bases. I've seen it spread out to the upper level, where the train track is.

@SMIFFGIG: These are surely also useful for tournaments, so each player has the same conditions and no-one can complain about the slightest advantage of another player.
And between all the other, more natural kept maps, are these a nice variety.
