But still, a laser that can burn trough a civilian car engine is a far cry from cutting trough tank-grade (or heavier) armour #Tongue

Just means the tank has a longer resistance before it'll melt. Still though you could use it to fry people.

just like people laughed at concept of Phaser guns from star trek
yet few years ago they managed to make such weapon to shoot
few meters ...

dunno if this is extension of it on larger scale ...

That is not athena, this is the German variant stationed in switzerland, Rheinmetalls HEL Anti Air Solition. It's a Turret variant of Germanys MANTIS Anti Aircraft systems.

American Lasers have been primarily outfitted on Naval vessels, especially for purposes in the gulf against speedboats etc.

While not the same, it's a lockheed laser, most likely what the ATHENA looks like, as lockheed is very... boring with their designs.

i think these weapons are in every way superior and we will have more and more advanced weapons, simply because it doesn't have exactly ammunition and the electricity bill is incomparable with the fuckton of money that ship ammunition wastes by every shot, or missiles even.

the only thing that is disappointing is the fact that you don't see a thing, or hear a thing, which makes it a bit anticlimactic....but i'd imagine it would look absolutely cool at night Very Happy

100 years ago and earlier, battles were fought in direct line of sight

Then ranges became longer and the enemies didn't even saw each other

Now, no projectile based weapon will reach a target anymore and the only offense are direct line of sight laser attacks. (except they shoot on a plane with a mirror under the fuselage to redirect it beyond the ships visible horizon)
Seems like back to roots again.

I recall reading that as long as the missile spins, the heat is distributed enough for lasers to be inefficient at shooting them down. It's more effective to hit them with physical projectiles.

So railguns are cool.

well all I ever think of when war is in question
will USa or Skunkworks or whoever of them secret companies
make Ion cannon, as if I recall a diary of Nikola Tesla mentiones
such weapon, maybe even his invention of it, yet it is all stolen
away and normally regarded as fiction

makes you just wonder who has the designs
as LKO wrote, wars won't be anymore waged with any shooting of projectiles
you just pinpoint the dot on freaking map and BOOOM

was Under Siege 2 close to that idea ?
