So tomorrow I start mydegree course on computing (woot woot), and that reminded me of this favourite project of mine I forgot (Red Alert for life).

Anyways, how easy would you say Ares is to dive into, and what sort of knowledge prerequisites are there?

I meant the coding side rather than the coding side...
That is to say, the coding of the new features rather than the coding to use new features.
Hmm...

I want to help make, not need help using.

Think discussion is still on irc.freenode.net/#renproj. Haven't been there for years myself though.

Code is at https://github.com/Ares-Developers/Ares - bit outdated, due to reasons I don't know, honestly - so you can try looking at that to see how understandable it is.

You'll need to know C++ and understanding assembly is really helpful. GUI knowledge isn't required.

I learned several programming languages on top of html/css and modding formats (which could be considered their own languages) without any computer degree... I don't see how your course is relevant.

What I will say is that every language has an underlying philosophy (same applies for CAD software btw), and preferred ways of doing things, this doesn't make the others (other languages, other ways) wrong or impossible, and the best software will break all the rules your classes will teach you. Find that underlying paradigm and try pushing it to the limit, to be a good coder you have to understand what's possible to understand how to structure it.

Sometimes focusing on elegance and efficiency with one set of goals in mind will totally screw you if you change goals. Experience will teach you how far to cut, but to be really good at it, you'll have to learn to think along multiple tracks/paradigms to compare methods on-the-fly to guide you...
