Hello everyone. First of all, I'd like to apologize for being silent in this place in the recent weeks. Although the popularity of the Command & Conquer franchise might be reducing in these years, a lot of interesting things happened in these recent weeks. I did not loose interest on this community at all, however I did loose focus.

The main reason is the doctorate that I couldn't finish. I'm still doing it, however, I had to re-enroll on it, since I've lost all deadlines and its extensions. Then, I've reached a situation where I had problems to understand the rules and what kind of subjects I had to redo... and I do have to redo a couple of stuff, but right now, this kind of thing is more clear to me. The research that drives this doctorate* is something that I consider worth of the sacrifice that I am doing and it will be a major breakthrough... not just for this site, but beyond.

* Despite being posted on the last April 1st, that post was not a joke. The joke was in the keywords "#April1stBelieveItOrNot".

Anyway, it is the doctorate and the problem of surviving almost two years without income. At least nearly one year an a half not being allowed to look into it and now, that I am allowed, there are some other obstacles, which I won't get into details here.  Bankruptcy makes people more desperate. For those wondering if this affects the survival of this site, as long as PPM receives some kind of contribution, the site is safe. And if no one contributes and I get an income in june, I have every intention to keep PPM online for as long as I can.

I'd like to point out that while PPM may look like merely a site or a community about a decadent set of games, it is much more than that. It works as a gateway to attract game developers, it gets people together, it gives visibility to the work of many people and it has certainly helped some of the community members to get their place in the game industry (or, perhaps, on other kind of business as well). And, of course, it helps people to get friends as well. And yea, some of the games we cover here are not decadent at all (I.e.: OpenRA). And even for the other "decadent", old games.... they still have more life than many games and they do have potential to be alive for many years as well.

Anyway, I, once again, ask the help of all of you guys to, please, if you have an interesting news about a project of yours... or about something else that deserves attention, to contribute with us by posting about it in the Community News. But write a news post... you know? Describe the event, explain to the reader what is it about, what happened and make some effort to get a good looking english in your post even if you are not a native english speaker (which is my case). If your news post is good enough for our standards, we'll promote it to the front page. If not, we will either rewrite it or discard it (if it has no relations whatsoever with the content of this place or if it is a shameless spam). We welcome every contribution.

Q: If you are still in doctorate, are you going to be a surgeon when you finish? That's just a question.

In a nutshell, writing a doctrate equals writing a book about something scienc-y.
Writing it involves a lot of research, and sometimes the writer needs to test things out him-/herself.

So basically, after finishing it you can confound the scientific community and add Dr. to your name or pre-existing titles.

What's the point, you ask? MONEY!

It's not that kind of doctorate...

Sorry you had to re-enroll, that's really sucky, but I can understand your situation (no income myself) and if you are able to finally finish your doctorate that's excellent. I wouldn't worry too much about this place really, I know people will donate to keep it up, and the fact it's silent is really because people are working on their mods with not much to report yet is all. So it'll pick up eventually.

Your work looks really promising and sounds like it'll be quite a breakthrough, so good luck on your endeavors!

Really know that feeling - if I don't finish my diploma thesis next month (which I have low hopes because if RL taught me anything in these recent years is that I'm making the worst decisions ever within my own life) - I'll be thrown out of uni and will lose all the chances of getting something more worthwhile than as a factory assembly line operator.

Fun times. Goodluck though. Might be able to donate some money during June anyway, depends if I get the offtime at workplace I feel necessary to finish that thesis. If not, well... then year will be quite crazy as hell.

Yea, since i had to re-enroll, I have to redo some stuff that I did before (2 subjects, watch lectures, qualification exam), but it gives me a chance to finish my doctorate. I am able to redo most of those things in less than 6 months. Once I'm done with them, I can requalify again. However, there is another problem that is exclusive to my doctorate program: they'll only allow me to finish this doctorate in the end of 2019, regardless if I have everything finished in this year.

I do always worry about this place. Unfortunately, a website is something that you need to place constant dedication to make it look like it is updated often, with a constant flux of news. Otherwise, people start thinking that it looks dead and they'll start forgetting about it or simply disappearing. PPM is a place where most of the content is not produced by the webmaster, which helps me to keep it active, but if it looses its visitors, it will become a graveyard like many other sites.

And don't misjudge the news that happened here just because I've only posted one old one about Mental Omega. During this period, there were news from D-Day, OpenRA Mod SDK updates, Stu's Mod Manager 4 source code released (although this one would need some work to be a relevant news post), new tutorials, SHPs and some other stuff that I am not catching.... and this is just inside PPM. There is more outside if I look at ModDB for instance... or report the return of FileFront network... etc.

Oh man... as an outsider it is hard for me to say something that could be really helpful to you. So, what I'll say may sound generic, but it is as helpful as I can be from my ignorant point of view. You are probably taking bad decisions because you are stressed and you are getting stressed also because of these decisions... it is like a snowball getting bigger as it moves over the snow. You need to stress down somehow and try to work on your thesis when you are not "hot headed", even if you sacrifice a small part of the remaining time with your own pleasure. I don't know what's left for you to do. If it is just text, you can also ask help for someone you know and trust to aid you with it. If you also need to finish your implementation (like in my case), things get more complicated. And do not admit defeat until your deadline gone. If you have few weeks, days, hours, minutes... use it in your favor. And good luck with it. I hope you still have chances to get over it.

That doesnt sound very good, so, right now the yearly cost of the server is 30â x 12 + 15â x 9, since you have so many domain names, why do you have so many domain names?

I could try to donate myself since I have been employed for the last 3 months (tho I am about to leave in 14 days), but I really despise using pay pal, since they ask me to deposit cash in a bank account and I loose all trust at that point, if there were an easier method, I would go for it gladly.

And also, woops, I finished my thesis and resumed modding since october, but I havent been sharing any updates because I really do not like writting (Id rather spend my time making graphics instead), its funny, Shattered Paradise had a stream yesterday even. Gonna try to make an article soon since I am about finish all the assets of SP anyway.

This reminds me, have you thought of making a discord server for this page?

It's a way to make the brand look stronger. I won't post more details in a public place and I hope you be comprehensive with that.

I have thought about it and, so far, I am not leaning towards it. It would simply be another dead channel, since I don't use these things... and I don't know if anyone here would prefer to use an idle one from here rather than a more popular generic C&C discord server.

(I think a discord would actually kill the point of the forum for a lot of things and we'd only have 50% of the posts we have now...)

I disagree with you. Whatsapp, Facebook, Google+, Skype and other strong communication tools didn't kill it yet. Discord won't be the one to finish the job #Tongue.

Last time I checked... Skype is less than a shell of its former self, it wasnt even able to close its main window back then, discord offers so much more functionality in comparison, notifications, customizable chat rooms that can be made by anyone, voice chats, icons, roles, most contacts I know already migrated to it.

And I had no idea Google+ was used, Facebook and Whatsapp aim for different target groups, meaning they dont even compete with discord, but Google+ is a thing? really? O.o

I have never mentioned that the popularity of any of these services is at its best moment. It's simply that in 17 years, none of them killed PPM.
