Introduction:

Since OS SHP Builder 3.2, users were already able to do Blur effects on the image by using Mean Minimum, Mean 3x3, Mean 5x5 or Mean 7x7. Today, in my animation classes at my university, I've just learned how an anti-aliasing works. It simply adds a blur in the image. Instead of pixels getting 100% of their colour, they'll actually get the percentage of their original colour, based on their position. This means something like a Mean filter just after a resize. So, my experience was to see the difference between XCC Mixer resizer and SHP Builder resizer with the Mean filter.

I know that the operation with the SHP Builder takes more time and I already have in mind some ways to optimize it. But I was wondering about how true are the myths around the internet that says that SHP Builder sucks for resizing. So, I did a little research and here are the results:

The Experience:

The experienced was to resize the cyborg.shp from Tiberian Sun on 500% (both height and width). Increasing size of a image usually reduces its quality. Simply doing a resize on SHP Builder gives us a sucky result, I agree. But what about a smoothed resize?

So, this is what I've done. Resize + Mean 5x5 (all frames, whole frame, write on background, avg colour correction). I've also tested with ignore colour 0 and the result was the same, except that instead of taking 10 minutes, it only took few seconds.

Edit: When using write on background, SHP Builder replaced all colour #0 with #63 :S, making the filesize grow to miserables 65.6 mb (XCC's is 2.73 mb). When using something else like Consider #0 as (0,0,0), OS SHP Builder wrote a 2.67 mb (smaller than XCC's, because of the XCC's border)

The results:

I personally enjoyed the results from SHP Builder more than XCC's. XCC's has some strong borders unlike the SHP Builder's. In the other parts, both looked like very similar. I've also gave a try on the unsharp masking effect to improve SHP Builder's result and the result was interesting. Take a look yourself at the pictures below and post your comments.

Wow... so I was ignored Sad. I was expecting opinions about it.

Anyway, I've tested downsized stuff and the SHP Builder results are really terrible as meselfs said. Very pixelated, unlike XCC's. There is no way to make, with the latest released version, it look as good or better than XCC Mixer. Now I'm analysing XCC's anti-aliasing code, so I can learn something from it.

I'd never resize something that big. In fact, I only ever seem to resize down. Going up, I'd use Photoshop instead.

would? People can already use it. As I said, it's included since 3.2. People seem to resize some stuff in 25% or 20%, specially RA2 modders. The example above was a benchmark.
